FAQs
How much does natural stone restoration cost?
The cost of the natural stone restoration process is unique to your space because each home has a different layout, cumulative area, and individual quirks or considerations. The best way to get an accurate quote for your service is to call us so one of our expert technicians can assess your job – the quote is obligation-free.
Do you do stone benchtops?
Restore & Protect works with natural stone and concrete floors, bringing them back to their original beauty (or better in some cases). We do not restore bench tops or tables.
How long until we can walk on or touch the surfaces?
When sealing natural stone, the full cure and stain protection can take up to 72 hours depending on the sealer used – you can usually walk over penetrating sealers as soon as it the floor is visibly dry (or after the first 24 hours to be safe) but must avoid placing any heavy furniture, or risking any spills until the sealant is fully cured. Film-forming sealers will take longer to cure as they create a layer over the stone, instead of sinking in.
Note: Restore & Protect will advise you of the timeframe for your specific sealer at the quote stage and again during the service.
How do you clean natural stone to remove stains and grime?
For any deep cleaning, it’s best to work with the experts at Restore & Protect to make sure your natural stone is cleaned without causing damage, protecting it for future use and enjoyment.
In between maintenance cleaning, regular sweeping and mopping will keep your floor at its best.
If you use a cleaning solution, use one specific to your surface (e.g. marble cleaner, travertine cleaner). Do not use home remedies like vinegar or baking soda as these can cause damage like etching, scratching or dullness.
How do you maintain polished stone surfaces?
The best thing you can do is to wipe up spills immediately, and sweep and mop regularly to avoid any build up of debris or grime.
If you use a cleaner, it should be pH-neutral and specific to the type of stone you are cleaning. Avoid acidic cleaners or abrasive products – these can scratch, etch or dullen the polished surface.
More information: Caring for Sealed Surfaces
While sealers help to prevent or delay liquids from soaking into your porous natural stone, spills can still stain. It’s best to clean them up right away before they can react with or stain the stone. You can use warm soapy water and a soft brush or sponge (nothing abrasive) to do this.
Avoid:
- Acids, alkalis, solvents and harsh chemicals
- Scourers, wire brushes or other abrasive materials
Implement:
- Cleaning up spills ASAP.
- Regular sweeping and mopping.
- Using saucers under plant pots.
- Rubber feet for furniture (or using rubber-backed mats) to prevent scratches.
- Booking a Restore & Protect maintenance clean every 3-5 years. If you look after your surfaces appropriately, you can expect to need a reseal every 7-10 years.
