1. Full marble restoration

Ideal for heavily worn or damaged marble. This service can include grinding, de-lipping, stain removal, scratch correction and full surface refinement to restore clarity and smoothness.

This option is for you if:
  • You have deep scratches, stains or etching (patches where a spill or cleaning solution has reacted with the marble).
  • Your marble tile is uneven, making it harder to clean and more dangerous to walk on.
  • The surface shows obvious wear patterns of dullness or discolouration, or feels pitted or rough underfoot.

Choose this option for:
  • Shallow scratches, etching and minor staining.
  • When your floor is starting to lose its shine or has dull patches from wear and tear, but is not deeply damaged or uneven.

3. Marble Maintenance Cleaning

A deep professional clean using specialised equipment, designed to remove built-up grime and help preserve your marble between major restoration services.

This option is perfect for:
  • Removing build-up from daily living, such as grease, grime and dirt.
  • Deep-cleaning your floor when regular cleaning doesn’t seem to work or last.
  • Preparing your marble to be re-sealed, so you can protect the surface better.

Seal your marble to protect the surface

Marble is a porous natural stone, which means it can absorb liquids, oils and contaminants if left unsealed. This can lead to staining, discolouration and faster deterioration.

Our premium Guard Industry sealing products help protect your marble from:

  • Food and drink spills
  • Dirt or grime build-up
  • Everyday wear
  • Surface marking

Sealing with a high-quality product makes marble easier to clean, and easier to keep looking its best.

Does your marble need restoration?

It can be difficult to notice gradual changes in a floor you see every day. Here are some common warning signs your marble floor may be showing:

  1. Your marble looks dull and lacks its original shine.
  2. Etch marks or cloudy patches appear after spills or cleaning.
  3. Fine scratches are visible in sunlight or under lighting.
  4. Dirt builds up quickly and the floor never looks truly clean.
  5. The surface feels rough or worn underfoot.
  6. Tiles are uneven at edges or grout lines, creating trip hazards or catching on cleaning equipment.

Marble Restoration Terms Explained

Confused by what restoration actually involves? Here is a glossary explaining common terms and processes.

Lippage or 'de-lipping'

Particularly with marble tiles, the floor can become uneven over time as your home settles. These uneven edges are known as ‘lippage’, and ‘de-lipping’ simply means getting rid of them. This is usually done by grinding them back down to be level with the rest of the floor.

De-lipping makes your floor easier to clean, and removes tripping hazards.

Porosity is determined by how absorbent a type of stone is. Marble is naturally porous, which is why it needs refinement and sealing to prevent etching, stains, and repel dirt.

Grinding marble is a more aggressive first step using coarse diamond grit abrasive pads. Though it can sound overly intense, grinding can be the only way to properly smooth and level floors in need of restoration. It removes the top, uneven layer of stone to reveal the unblemished and level surface beneath. It is common to wet grind floors, meaning operators use water to help suppress dust.

In professional hands, grinding marble is a normal and controlled process that may be recommended for your floor restoration.

Honing will typically follow grinding. This is where we can use progressively finer abrasive pads to smooth the surface to a matte or satin finish, ready for polishing and then sealing. The marble will not have a shiny finish at this stage, but it will be smooth to touch.

Polishing is the ‘final’ manual refinement step before sealing the surface. This is what gives marble its characteristic shine, using the finest grit of diamond abrasive pads to reveal the full beauty of your marble floor. Though polished floors are naturally more durable than unfinished options as the refinement process helps to fill in tiny pores in the stone, we still recommend sealing after this to keep the polished finish intact and protected from future damage (like spills, dirt).

Sealing your freshly finished marble is important to provide protection. There are a few different options on the market:

  1. Topical sealers. These are the ‘old school’ sealers. They sit on top of the stone like a coating, making a physical barrier against damage. They are popular for creating high-gloss finishes. However, they are known for yellowing with age and tend to look awful once they start to fail – peeling or cloudiness is common in this case.
  2. Penetrating sealers. These are our preference. A newer technology, penetrating sealers sink deep into the pores of the stone to repel liquids and dirt from within rather than sitting on top. They enhance the appearance of the stone for a premium finish – and will not yellow with age.

FAQs

Can you restore damaged marble?

Yes, it’s entirely possible to restore damaged or dull marble using professional restoration services. Many floors can be restored with the right techniques, even with deep scratches or discolouration.

We would advise against it. Restoring marble to a high-quality finish takes experience, expertise, and the right equipment. DIY can lead you down an expensive path getting all the products and gear… and then you may still need a professional anyway. It is much easier, quicker and less stressful to contact Restore & Protect from the start.

No. Restore & Protect offers services for natural stone floors, not benchtops and countertops.

No. At Restore & Protect, we use wet-diamond grinding and polishing techniques. The water encapsulates the dust, preventing it from becoming airborne, ensuring your home stays clean and safe during the process.

It is important to note that sealers make marble stain-resistant, not entirely stain-proof. A sealer gives you a “reaction window” to wipe up spills before they penetrate the stone and set in.

Restoration is significantly more cost-effective and less disruptive than replacement. In almost all cases, Restore & Protect can return damaged, dull marble to a “brand new” condition for a fraction of the cost of sourcing and installing new stone.

If your marble looks “cloudy” or dull even after cleaning, it likely has etching or fine scratches that require professional honing and polishing. While our deep cleaning removes surface grime, restoration (grinding and polishing) is needed to remove physical damage and bring back the original mirror-like finish.
