Restore & Protect's Concrete Services
Concrete Grind and Seal

Concrete Grind and Seal
Ideal for:
- Those wanting a cheaper alternative to polished concrete.
- Existing concrete floors, even those not originally intended to be ground and sealed.
- Updating older homes for a ‘premium’ look and feel.
Revitalise your existing concrete floors with a more budget-friendly alternative to concrete polishing. Grinding and sealing concrete floors is a 4-5 step process that adds durable protection and can achieve a finish similar to polished concrete, at a comparatively lower cost.
The sealing process forms a topical layer to protect the smoothed concrete, lasting approximately 5-7 years between sealing (when appropriately maintained).
Note: Topical sealer is more prone to scratching. Use protective measures where possible such as rubber feet on chairs, rugs under furniture.
Concrete Polishing
Ideal for:
- Those wanting a very durable floor, e.g. for high-traffic areas that need to stand the test of time.
- Value-focused renovations on existing concrete (polishing lasts longer and has less maintenance requirements over its life).
Polished concrete has an undeniable elegance, with a smooth and high-sheen finish achieved through expert mechanical refinement.
Polishing concrete densifies the material by filling minor imperfections and using progressively finer diamond polishing grits. If you want a beautifully shiny floor that’s exceedingly durable, long-lasting, and looks timeless, concrete polishing is the way to go.
Restore & Protect use specialised equipment and a penetrating sealer that won’t scratch or peel to achieve the stunning result you want. Ask us about our concrete polishing service today.

FAQs
What's the difference between a grind and seal and a full concrete polish?
Grinding is a 4-5 step process. A concrete grinder removes lipping and uneven areas to create a smooth, uniform surface, which is then sealed to achieve the desired finish. The sealer brings out any inclusions as well for a beautiful natural stone-look floor. It’s a cheaper option than traditional polished concrete floors, and uses a topical film-forming sealer for an almost identical finish. You will need to re-seal every 5-7 years depending on your upkeep and general wear and tear. The film-forming seal may scratch with use. You also have more freedom to customise different finishes, like using a matte sealer.
Polishing is a 10-12 step process that produces a smooth, high-gloss surface that is incredibly hard-wearing and suitable for high traffic areas. The process of polishing requires multiple refinement stages of densifying, grouting / filling, and then polishing to a high sheen using diamond burnishing pads. Finally, a penetrating sealer like Protect Guard CE (special concrete) is applied to further enhance durability against scratching, staining and other wear and tear. With proper maintenance and care, this finish will last around 10 years before you need to re-seal.
Can you polish aggregate concrete surfaces?
Yes, this will give an appearance similar to terrazzo with flecked inclusions – but with the shine and smoothness of polished concrete.
Can you grind and polish old concrete?
Yes. Grinding and sealing, or polishing concrete is a manual process and almost any concrete floor or surface is suitable for this. Using the right floor grinder and diamond grit abrasives, experienced technicians can achieve a high-gloss finish on older concrete slabs.
How long will it take to complete the work, and can I walk on it during the process?
That depends on what you are having done, how large the area is, and what type of sealant has been applied – for example, a penetrating sealer (polished concrete) has a different curing time to a film forming sealant (concrete grinding & sealing). Restore & Protect will advise you at the quoting stage and during the service of the timeline you need to follow for your newly finished concrete floor.
Note: If a sealer has been applied, it can take up to 72 hours (or longer, depending on the sealant and humidity levels) to fully cure. You should avoid all traffic on the surface for the first 24 hours after your service is finished.
How much does it cost to polish concrete in Australia?
That depends largely on your home’s layout, and how long the work will take. You can contact our friendly team for an estimate based on your home’s specifications.
Can you grind concrete yourself?
Concrete floor grinding and/or polishing concrete surfaces requires specialised equipment, PPE to combat dust particles, and the knowledge and experience to get a uniform, beautifully smooth finish.
It can also be difficult for DIY-ers to know and access the correct range of diamond pads for concrete polishing. They vary from extra soft to soft, medium, hard and extra hard – which grit diamond you use at each stage will vastly impact your end result, not to mention the time you spend trying to get everything perfect.
It’s much easier to get the experts in from the start – contact Restore & Protect today to get started.
